Feeding guidelines
Feed mature idle horses 0.4 – 0.8% of body weight per day. Horses in light work should be fed 0.5 ? 1.0% of body weight per day, those in moderate work should be fed 0.6 ? 1.2% of body weight per day, and those in heavy work should be fed 0.8 ? 1.5% of body weight per day. Pregnant mares should be fed 0.5 ? 1.5% of body weight per day.
Lactating mares should be fed 0.6 ? 1.5% of body weight per day. Growing horses 20+ months of age should be fed 0.9 ? 1.5% of body weight. Amount required will depend on the horse?s activity level, body weight, and other factors.
- Limit meal size to 0.5 lb per 100 lb body weight.
- Feed in combination with a minimum of 1.0 – 1.5 lb of good-quality forage per 100 lb body weight per day.
- Allow free-choice access to fresh, clean water and salt.
